How did the parishes implement your directives concerning the battle to be fought?

I must say that the parishes received them very well. In each one, there was a good group of leaders, and, among the faithful generally, there was very strong support for the pro-life movement. There were of course some who opposed it, but fortunately, they were relatively rare. In the Archdiocese of Saint Louis, the pro-life movement was already well developed. When the Supreme Court ruled to legalize abortion, the Archbishop at the time, Cardinal John J. Carberry, immediately formed an archdiocesan committee to promote life and opened a special pro-life office. He insisted that in every parish persons be delegated to report to the Archbishop's chancery on the pro-life cause. Every year in Saint Louis there is a big pro-life conference with many presentations and with opportunities for people to become acquainted with good books and different pro-life organizations. Incidentally, this conference meets with great success. In the United States, young people are very sensitive to the pro-life movement. On the occasion of the March for Life in Washington, D.C., one young man put it this way: “I was born in 1975, and I have to thank my parents for having allowed me to be born.” The young people are aware that every life is in danger before birth.
